Migration from provinces to be halted until 2020
Society
Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The Cabinet resolved to halt migration to the capital city until January 1, 2020 at its regular meeting on December 27.
The migration halt order will exclude those who are in need of necessary medical treatments in the capital city, public servants on an assignment who need to live and work in the capital city for more than six months and their families, and those purchased an apartment in the capital city.
Due to violation of citizens’ right to live in a safe and healthy environment and increases of air pollution and traffic jam caused by sharp increase of the capital city population, Ulaanbaatar Mayor S.Batbold had issued an ordinance to suspend migration to the capital city from provinces until January 1, 2018.
During the Cabinet meeting, Mayor S.Batbold presented his proposal to extend the suspension until 2020, which was thus conceptually approved by the Cabinet.
In the last year when migration was halted, 9,567 citizens have migrated to Ulaanbaatar as of November this year, which is fewer by 11,552 people against the previous year.
It is notable that there has been a decrease in the number of permanent residents of Ulaanbaatar for the first time in recent years with 10,161 people migrating to provinces in the said period.
