Flood Protection Dams and Drainage Networks to be Built at Nine New Sites
Society
Ulaanbaatar, September 29, 2025 /MONTSAME/. With financing from the World Bank, flood protection dams, canal structures, and stormwater drainage pipelines will be renovated and expanded at nine locations across the Capital city.
The project, for which the terms of reference for the feasibility study (FS) and environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) have been approved, will be implemented in two packages. Under Package 1, flood protection dams and canals will be rehabilitated, while Package 2 will introduce trenchless technology to upgrade and renovate sewer pipelines without excavation.
The Ulaanbaatar City Planning and Research Institute has been selected as the contractor to prepare the FS and ESIA, and has entered into an agreement with the World Bank. The initial report has been revised and submitted to the client and the World Bank, with comments and recommendations received. Incorporating the feedback, the initial and interim reports will be delivered to the client. The project foresees the construction of flood protection facilities and main stormwater drainage pipelines.
Due to excessive population density, unplanned settlements, and climate change, the risks of flooding in Ulaanbaatar have grown to encompass large areas, threatening the lives and health of residents as well as urban infrastructure. This has necessitated a comprehensive solution to address flood protection and groundwater issues. Accordingly, within the framework of the “Reducing Flood Risks in Ulaanbaatar City” project, flood protection facilities and stormwater drainage networks are planned for construction at 22 sites.
