In this edition of the series ‘Mongolian Fine Art Masterpiece’ brought to you by MONTSAME News Agency in cooperation with Mongolian National Art Gallery, we are presenting the artwork, ‘Khoyor Buur’ (Two male camels) by People’s Artist of Mongolia, Honored Art Figure A.Sengetsokhio.

The artwork was painted on a 70x80 canvas using gouache in 1971. With the scene taking place in the snow-covered Gobi desert during the cold harsh winter, the piece depicts how majestic a camel can look in great detail. Despite a herd of camels peacefully grazing in the distance, two male camels - one black and one red, fill the frame as they rub against one another. The depiction of their large body and wavy hair covered in frost, strong hooves, and its big eyes angrily looking around suggests a fierce battle may soon take place.

The artist created his series of works, ‘Khar Buur’ (Black Male Camel) and ‘Khoyor Buur’ (Two Male Camels) in 1952 by illustrating what he saw on his way to a border brigade in Umnugobi aimag, enriching it artistically.

Artist A.Sengetsokhio was born as a son of a herder named Adiya in Nariin teel soum, Uvurkhangai aimag in 1917. His artistic talents began to show from a young age as he started carving the traditional game of uichuur as well as chess pieces early on. During the time he worked as an artist at the Union of Mongolian Artists in 1962-1978, he created many of his great works, making highly significant contributions to the modern art and decorative arts scene through his pieces.

In connection with the current situation of the pandemic, the gallery has also put together a virtual exhibit called ‘Quarantine Gallery’. Click this link to see the virtual exhibit.
