Ulaanbaatar, May 8, 2024 /MONTSAME/. The Working Group established by the Office of the President of Mongolia to boost the implementation of the "One Billion Trees" National Campaign initiated by the President of Mongolia has worked at the “Tavantolgoi” JSC located in Tsogtsetsii soum, Umnugobi aimag May 8, 2024.

“Tavantolgoi” JSC has supported the "One Billion Trees" National Campaign by committing to plant and grow 6 million trees. Additionally, by pledging to plant and grow 1.5 million trees in Umnugobi aimag, the company is working under three main goals to plant a total of 7.5 million trees.

Developing a long-term strategy and plan for tree planting:

“Tavantolgoi” JSC, by establishing a Memorandum of Understanding with the National University of Mongolia (NUM) in 2021, has enabled a team of scholars and researchers from NUM and the Institute of Geography and Geoecology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences to conduct field research in Nomgon, Tsogtsetsii, Bulgan, and Dalanzadgad soums in Umnugobi aimag.

Establishing a training and research center and a permanent tree nursery:

In pursuit of this goal, a tree nursery was established in 2022-2023 on a 6-hectare area in Dalanzadgad soum. As of today, it has reserved 1.8 million seedlings and saplings. Additionally, preparations began in 2022 to establish a "Tree Nursery, Training, Research, and Innovation" center on a 20-hectare area in Nomgon soum. A 4-hectare tree nursery has been built to nurture native Gobi plants.

Establishing windbreak, and protecting and supporting the growth of saxaul forests:

Since the launch of the "One Billion Trees" National Campaign, the company has planted a total of 12,000 trees through reforestation and afforestation and has registered on the terbummod.mn website. Over 50 percent of the total trees to be planted are Haloxylon, contributing to the forest area of the Gobi region, with plans to implement this in the territories of Nomgon and Bulgan soums. Additionally, in 2022-2023, the members of the Working Group were introduced to the preparation work for afforestation on 40 hectares of land in Tsogtsetsii soum, including the fence, irrigation systems, and water wells.

“Tavantolgoi” JSC is remarkable for nurturing seedlings in its own nursery, particularly those in pots. Furthermore, by establishing tree nurseries in two soums of Umnugovi aimag, the company not only meets its internal needs for seedlings but also supplies them to the local region, exceeding its commitment and planning to plant 15 million trees by 2030, as highlighted by B. Sodnomtseren, the Director of the Labor Safety, Health, and Environment Department of “Tavantolgoi” JSC.

In 2024, the company plans to carry out afforestation on 100 hectares in Bulgan soum in Umnugovi aimag, establish windbreaks with deciduous trees on 100 hectares in Nomgon soum, and create windbreak with deciduous trees on 40 hectares in Tsogtsetsii soum. A labor shortage was highlighted during this period, despite having a reserve of 1.8 million ready-to-plant seedlings.
