Ulaanbaatar, April 23, 2025 /MONTSAME/. UNESCO established World Book and Copyright Day in 1995, which is celebrated annually on April 23rd. It has been 30 years since its first celebration.

In honor of this day, UNESCO has been organizing the “World Book Capital Project” since 2001. Each year, a city is selected as the “World Book Capital” based on its efforts to promote books and encourage reading. In recent years, the following cities have been recognized as World Book Capitals: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2019), Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (2020), and Guadalajara, Mexico (2022).

Despite the rapid pace of technological advancements shaping the world, people's connection to books and reading culture still thrives. Books remain one of the most important sources of information, and the demand for books has continued to rise throughout history.

The term “Copyright” refers to the exclusive right granted to authors or creators to publish, reproduce, and share their intellectual works. Copyright is typically granted for a limited time and is considered a type of intellectual property. It applies to various forms of creative works, including literary, dramatic, and musical creations. Most countries require that works be in a tangible form to be eligible for copyright protection. Under the Berne Convention, "Literary and Artistic Works" include literary texts, scientific works, art creations, books, booklets, and other written materials, regardless of how they are produced.

According to the Constitution of Mongolia, intellectual property is owned by the creator, who has the right to create and benefit from their works. The Copyright Law of Mongolia, which was adopted on June 22, 1993, came into effect on September 1, 1993. Thanks to this Law, authors of literary, artistic, and scientific works in Mongolia have been able to obtain copyright protection and benefit from their creations.
