Katsuhide Nagayama Awarded “Outstanding Builder” Honor for Contributions to Mongolia’s Urban Development
Society
Ulaanbaatar, October 6, 2025 /MONTSAME/. In recognition of his significant contributions to Mongolia’s urban planning and development, Katsuhide Nagayama, Senior Advisor at Almec Corporation, was awarded the “Outstanding Builder” honorary medal by the Ministry of Urban Development, Construction, and Housing of Mongolia. The award was officially presented on October 7, 2025.
Mr.
Nagayama’s involvement with Mongolia began in 1998,
when he served as the project manager for JICA’s “City
Development Strategy (CDS) Program in East Asia” implemented in
Mongolia. Since then, Dr. Nagayama
has led several key urban development initiatives, including:
- The
Project for Ulaanbaatar Urban Planning Improvement
- The
Study on Implementation of the Ulaanbaatar City Urban Transportation Project
(PPP Infrastructure Project)
- The
Study for Improvement of the Urban Transport System in Ulaanbaatar City
- The
Project for Strengthening Government Capacity for Public Investment Planning
One
of his most impactful contributions was the Study
on the City Master Plan and Urban Development Program of Ulaanbaatar City
(2007–2009), a master plan revision project that laid the foundation for the “Revised Master Plan for Ulaanbaatar City until 2020 and
Development Vision toward 2030.”
Beyond
Mongolia, Dr. Nagayama has contributed to numerous JICA-supported
projects in over 20 countries,
including Albania, Bangladesh, China, India, Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Cambodia, Costa Rica, Egypt, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Laos, Malaysia,
Myanmar, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey,
and Vietnam.
An accomplished urban planner and academic, Dr. Nagayama earned his Bachelor of Engineering in Architecture from Waseda University, Japan, in 1974, followed by a Master’s degree in City Planning from both Waseda University and the University of Pennsylvania (USA). He later completed a Ph.D. in Urban Economics.
