President Ts.Elbegdorj takes part in IDEA discussion

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On September 26, President of Mongolia Ts.Elbegdorj took part in and gave speech to the thematic discussion “Ensuring citizens’ involvement in sustainable development”, organized by International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) along with Mongolia, the Swiss Federation and Botswana.

He highlighted in his speech that the sustainable development goals incorporate goals for society and economy, as well as for the environment, while the Millennium Development Goals mainly focused on the social issues.

The President emphasized that the involvements and initiatives of civil societies, NGOs and ordinary citizens are crucial in mobilization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mongolia is to chair the International IDEA in 2016, and will focus on implementing as many frameworks as possible during the presidency, he noted.

Key speakers of the discussion were, President of Switzerland Simonetta Sommaruga, Vice President of Botswana Mokgweetsi Masisi, Assistant Secretary-General for Policy Coordination and Inter-Agency Affairs in UN DESA Mr Thomas Gass, and Secretary-General of the International IDEA Mr Yves Leterme.
