Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The US Embassy in Ulaanbaatar reported Thursday that Mongolian immigration officer Khangerel Tumenbaatar traveled to the USA to participate in the International Visitor Leaderships Program (IVLP) focused on “Children in the U.S. Justice System”.

Mr Khangerel is the Chief of the Department of Immigration at the Mongolian Immigration Agency. Through this program, he learned best practices about U.S. visa policy and examined U.S. standards related to child advocacy, welfare issues, and parental rights.

In Washington D.C., Mr. Khangerel began his IVLP visit by consulting with U.S. government officials from the Bureau of East Asia and Pacific Affairs and the Office of Legal Affairs and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services representatives. At these meetings, he learned about U.S. policy and regulations concerning visas and citizenship. During his visit to George Mason University and George Washington University, he learned about visa regulations with regards to student exchanges between the U.S. and Mongolia.

Mr Khangerel also visited other cities including New York City, Austin, Chicago, and Seattle. In these cities, he visited other government institutions at the federal and local level, such as Customs and Border Protection at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the National Visa Center, the Texas Supreme Court and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and the Foster and Adoptive Development. During these visits, he met with officials and representatives who familiarized him with practices related to issues such as state and county judicial oversight on adoption and foster care, adoption law and immigration policy. In addition to government agencies, he also visited non-profit organizations such as Chicago Area Families for Adoption, the Children’s Partnership, Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services, and the Foundation for International Understanding through Students.

IVLP is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. Through short-term visits to the United States, leaders in a variety of fields learn more about their specialty areas and cultivate lasting relationships with their American counterparts.
