Dundgobi /MONTSAME/ A genetic study will be conducted on camels in the Oldokhiin tal area of Dundgobi aimag by researchers of the Institute of General and Experimental Biology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. Camels in Oldokhiin tal are said to have distinctive qualities, but no scientific research has been done to confirm the peculiarity and exclusive benefits of them.

“- Dundgobi aimag has 3.59 million heads of livestock and many types of animals with hidden benefits have been noticed by specialists. Therefore, we aim to discover these types of animals and create new breeds in the aimag. The work starts with the camel and further genetic studies should be made on ghur horse of Bayanjargalan, fine-fleeced sheep of Tsagaandelger and Erdenedalai soums and shawl goat in southern part of Ulziit soum” said a specialist of Agriculture Department of Dundgobi aimag J.Batbileg.

At the end of last year, the camel population in Dundgobi aimag reached 33.9 thousand, 3500 of which are raised on the territory of Oldokh bag of Khuld soum.

The camel herd, on which the genetic study will be made, is called Dalangiin khongor, named after Dalan, continuous hills in the Oldokhiin tal area, as a new breed can be named after local geographical sites. Blood samples will be taken from 50-60 camels and DNA testing will be made to define their genetic features.
