Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On May 24, Mongolia marked 'Europe Day' which is officially celebrated internationally on May 9. A reception was hosted by EU Ambassador to Mongolia Hans Dietmar Schweisgut who is paying a two-day visit to Mongolia on May 23-25 from Beijing, China.

Speaking on the first Europe Day in Mongolia, the Ambassador said, “Not a lot of people know about Europe Day, and we needed to bring the celebration to Mongolia due to the fact that the EU and Mongolia have become much closer partners with bilateral relations growing stronger.  It is also a sign that we want to strengthen our presence in Ulaanbaatar”.  Europe Day will be thus marked every year in Mongolia from now on.

The main purpose of the Ambassador’s ‘really short visit’, as he put it, was to attend the Europe Day reception, and meet with colleagues and officials. He also met with government officials including the Ministers of Finance and Foreign Affairs to discuss projects, financial cooperation and other bilateral issues such as peacekeeping methods, visa liberalization, and facilitation.

During his meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs Ts.Munkh-Orgil, he was presented with the Order of Polar Star medal.  “I am honored and proud to have been awarded with the Polar Star medal.  I am a great fan of Mongolia, and it means a lot to me”, he shared.

Ambassador Schweisgut headed the diplomatic mission of Austria to Mongolia from 2003 to 2007 and was appointed Ambassador of the EU to Mongolia in 2014. “I am happy to be back, in a different capacity”, he said.  “I was surprised how Ulaanbaatar had changed from 2007 to 2014 to become a much more modern and international city”.
The full interview with the Ambassador is published on the 21st issue of the Mongol Messenger.
