Deputy PM attends UN disaster risk reduction forum in Mexico

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Deputy Prime Minister of Mongolia U.Khurelsukh attended the 5th session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, which took place in Cancun city, Mexico on May 22-26. During his participation in the event, he held a meeting with Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for Home Home Affairs of India.

After congratulating the Government of India and Ministry of Home Affairs of India for successfully hosting the first Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction in November 2016, Deputy PM U.Khurelsukh informed that the government of Mongolia is paying attention to carry-out New Delhi Declaration on disaster risk reduction and Asian Regional Plan for implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

He then presented that Mongolia is making policy reform in may areas by improving governance in accordance with the international tendency of disaster risk reduction, taking economic benefit and costs into consideration, moving toward emergency awareness, ensuring participation of volunteers and improving management and coordination of humanitarian activities.  

"Formulation of 2017-2020 medium-term strategy to implement Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in Mongolia is completed soon to be approved by the Government. Mongolia is going to host the second Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction in July 2018 in Ulaanbaatar' informed Deputy PM. "In the scope of the latter event, Mongolia and the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) co-organized an ISDR Asian Partnership (IAP) meeting last May in Ulaanbaatar and Asian leaders' meeting will be held next September in Ulaanbaatar" he added. 
 
U.Khurelsukh also said that during the second Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction which will take place in Ulaanbaatar next year, Mongolia is planning to focus on issues of enhancing disaster management capacity in urban areas and increase investment to reduce disaster risks. 
 
Afterwards, Indian Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed his belief that more ideas will be exchanged on bilateral relations and cooperation in the reduction and protection of disaster risks, during his official visit to Mongolia in July 2017.
