Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ A Parliamentary delegation of Mongolia is attending the 137th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, taking place on October 14-18 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The delegation comprised Ya.Sanjmyatav, Deputy Speaker, parliamentarians L.Bold, Z.Narantuya and D.Murat.

Under the main theme 'Promoting Cultural Pluralism and Peace through Inter-Faith and Inter-Ethnic Dialogue', the Assembly has also featured sessions of the IPU’s six geopolitical groups: the African Group, the Arab Group, the Asia-Pacific Group, the Eurasia Group, the Group of Latin-America and the Caribbean, and the Twelve Plus Group.

Deputy Speaker Ya.Sanjmyatav chaired the Asia-Pacific Group session on October 14 at the Parliamentary center. Some 140 parliamentarians from 24 countries took part in the session.

“The main theme of the Assembly is very well-timed. It worries us that today local and international conflicts and fights are mainly caused by arguments between religions or ethnic groups. Therefore Mongolia will support any initiative for inter-faith and inter-ethnic dialogue. Protecting basic rights of ethnic groups and respect their traditional religion and culture is an inseparable part of the state policy and its actions of Mongolia,” he noted in his opening speech.

Later Ya.Sanjmyatav also attended the meeting of regional groups chairs and standing committees presidents, held in the Tavricheskiy Palace.

The IPU is the oldest existing international parliamentary organization. It was established in 1889 and brings together parliamentarians from 173 countries, as well as 11 inter-parliamentary organizations. Mongolia joined IPU in 1962.
