Minister requests support for national geo-database program

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ On November 14, Mining and Heavy Industry Minister D. Sumyabazar met representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

At the meeting, Irina Kravchenko, Head of EBRD Office in Mongolia, introduced EBRD’s ongoing projects in Mongolia.

The Minister appreciated valuable contributions of the EBRD to Mongolia’s mining, infrastructure and SMEs development. He said, “Accountable and transparent mining must be developed in Mongolia. We will support projects that can contribute to Mongolia’s state budget and local development and solve social issues of workers.”

Minister D. Sumyabazar thanked the EBRD for its cooperation in formulation of the Bill on Mining and informed that the ministry plans to introduce a revised version of the Bill to public and organize a wide-range of discussions on the Bill with involvement of mining experts and specialists, relevant NGOs and experienced seniors of mining sector.

Agreeing with the Minister’s position, Irina Kravchenko expressed EBRD’s further interest to promote projects on accountable and value-added minerals production. She also added that it plans to implement a project to repair Oyutolgoi-Khangi road in Umnugobi aimag as the mining sector is inseparably connected with road and transport sector.

Mining Minister said that the ministry is working to formulate a program ‘National Geo-database’ and have it approved by the Government in early 2018.  In this regard, he put forward a request to render supports to create a software of modern geo-database and build a capacity of personnel within the frame of the program.
