Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ As of today, about 50 percent of Mongolia’s territory is blanketed in snow. According to reports of the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring, white dzud has been reported in 66 soums of 12 aimags, whilst 41 soums of 14 aimags are under white dzud-like conditions.

Due to weather complications, a total of 710,740 head of livestock were perished. Khovd, Uvs, Khuvsgul and Khentii aimags show the highest rates of livestock death.

A dzud is a Mongolian term for a severe winter in which large numbers of livestock die, primarily due to starvation  being unable to graze, in other cases directly from the cold. There are various kinds of dzud, including white dzud, which is an extremely snowy winter in which livestock are unable to find nourishing foodstuff through the snow cover and starve.
