Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The European Union’s (EU) Trade Related Assistance for Mongolia (TRAM) Project has been launched at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today.

The EUR 5 million project will be running for two years until 2020, with an aim to diversify Mongolia’s export goods. The TRAM Project is to be co-implemented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the EU Delegation to Mongolia and the Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Although Mongolia has an opportunity to export 7,200 types of products to the EU member states tariff-free, only about 10 goods including cashmere and leather products are exported today.

The project objective is to enhance Mongolia’s international trade and economic diversification and to contribute to sustainable economic growth and development of the country.

D.Davaasuren, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said at the project launch, “In frames of the project, Mongolia will frame optimal and effective policy, trade will be facilitated and the economy will be diversified. Mongolia must focus on the capacity building of its workforce while developing a trade policy. During the project’s implementation, various actions will be taken to improve the trade correlation of all government bodies, and the coordination of private sectors and their capacity.”

Marco Ferri, Chargé d'Affaires of the EU Delegation to Mongolia also said, “Although Mongolia as the potentials to export animal-origin products to the EU, our standards must be complied with. We ran a standardization project between 2014-2017 in cooperation with the Agency for Standardization and Metrology, as a result of which a new bill on standardization is expected to be adopted this July. Adoption of the bill will enable the export of animal-origin products. The EU has a strict policy on food, therefore some additional projects are running as well.”
