Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/. ‘Uvs Chatsargana’, seabuckthorn
berries from Uvs aimag, has been registered in the EU as the first Protected
Geographical Indication from Mongolia. The registration procedure was first begun
in 2016 with the support of the Intellectual Property Office of Mongolia, the
Uvs Sea buckthorn and the Embassy of France. From 2019, the Mongolian National
Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MNCCI), SEQUA project team of the Association
of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Uvs Sea buckthorn producers'
association continued their cooperation in creating a value-added chain for sea
buckthorn growers, which has reached this result.
The Uvs Chatsargana's registration as Geographical Indication
(GI) in the European Union will help it be protected in the EU member states
from imitation and usurpation. Moreover, it has the advantage of increasing the
income of local seabuckthorn growers and producers, supporting sustainable
business, preserving the unique taste and quality due to the environment and
climate, creating a new tourism product, and ensuring customers’ use of quality
and standard products. For this activity, the MNCCI provided support to the private
sector in conducting laboratory analysis of Uvs seabuckthorn and editing documents.
