Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ UN FAO
organized ‘Beneficiaries of camel milk value chain’ workshop in Khanbodg soum
of Umnugobi aimag in the framework of European Union funded ‘SDG-Aligned
Budgeting to Transform Employment in Mongolia’ project. The workshop involved
the participation of the local camel herders and camel milk producers,
including TESO group and Mongol Camel Corporation, Food and Agriculture
Department and Veterinary Department of Umnugobi aimag and Khanbogd soum
Government in the framework of public private partnership.
The workshop goal was to
define the main challenges in the camel milk value chain and bring out possible
solutions. One of the main challenges in the chain was low supply of the raw
milk due to shortage of camel milkers resulting in inefficient use of available
resources. Therefore, it was concluded that there is an urgent need to increase
the number of local skilled camel milkers through trainings and capacity
building.
During the workshop, TESO
group introduced their new export-oriented dried milk and capsule products
based on camel milk, which excited the local authorities and camel herders.
TESO group has established a cold chain for camel milk production in Khanbogd soum
with nine households. All parties agreed that there was potential to increase
number of the herders and households in the camel milk cold chain system in
future.
There project discussed the
opportunity to support semi-intensive livestock farming and cooperatives in
partnership with ‘Gobi Oyu Development Support Fund’, which involves Khanbogd
soum, local herders and Oyu Tolgoi LLC.
