Mongolia won Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Mongolian female inmates became the winners of the Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for prisoners. The event was organized by the FIDE and the Cook County Sheriff`s Office (Chicago, IL, USA) and coincided with the International Day of Education in Prison (October 13) under the project “Chess for freedom”.


It is the second gold medal of the Intercontinental Championship for Prisoners under team Mongolia`s belt. A year ago, the country won gold in the open competition of the inaugural event. Mongolia has a long-standing tradition of teaching chess in prisons. Since 1956, chess tournaments have been organized in all correctional units of the country.


85 teams from 46 countries such as the United States, the Republic of Belarus, Germany, Norway, Australia, and Canada competed in the competition. Mongolia was represented by two men's teams from the 45th and 427th prison camps, and a female team from the 407th prison camp.
