Mongolian Women Parliamentarians Meet with Representatives of the European Parliament

Ulaanbaatar, November 1, 2023 /MONTSAME. On October 31, 2023, Deputy Speaker of the State Great Khural of Mongolia Odontuya Saldan, Member of Parliament and Chair of the Parliamentary Group of the State Great Khural for relations with the European Union Munkhtsetseg Tserenjamts and Member of Parliament Adiyasuren Amgalan met with the representatives of the European Parliament.

 

At the outset of the Meeting, Deputy Speaker Odontuya expressed her satisfaction with the successful organization of the 16th Consultative Meeting of the European Parliament and the State Great Khural of Mongolia. Deputy Speaker Odontuya stressed that the female parliamentarians in the State Great Khural will actively work to strengthen friendly relations between the two legislative bodies in the international arena, founded on the core values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

 

Tomáš Zdechovský, the Member of the European Parliament and Chair of the European Parliament's Delegation for Cooperation with Central Asia and Mongolia (DCAS) thanked Mongolia for setting a positive example in the region by striving to achieve the goal of a gender-sensitive parliament that respects human rights. He pledged to work to increase the number of women in the parliament and support their resources in every possible way.

 

At the Meeting, Member of Parliament Munkhtsetseg emphasized that Mongolia is paying attention to improving its legal environment based on the recommendations and observations of international organizations to promote women's participation and gender equality at the decision-making level. She stated that the review of the Law on Political Parties is an important step towards increasing the proportion of women parliamentarians and improving their participation and leadership at all levels.

 

The Chair of DCAS Tomáš Zdechovský noted that women outnumber men in the European Parliament, and as a result, two-thirds of leadership and management positions are held by women. Adiyasuren, a member of the State Great Khural, emphasized the importance of implementing a comprehensive solution to improve the education of voters who endorse socially traditional values, establish equal pay for equal work, and support women at all levels.

 

Tomáš Zdechovský commended Mongolian youth for their knowledge and attitude and expressed his willingness to provide comprehensive support to strengthen representative democracy and promote equal participation.
