Progress of Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod Cross-Border Railway Project Introduced

the Cabinet session on October 9, Minister of Road and Transport Delgersaikhan
Borkhuu presented the implementation of the decisions regarding the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod
cross-border railway project, made by the Parliament, the Government, and the Ministers
of the relevant sectors since 2008, and work progress of the working group
established by the Prime Minister's Decree No. 28 of 2024.
The 233.6 km Tavantolgoi-Gashuunsuhait railway, which
connects the Tavantolgoi coal deposit located in Tsogt-Tsetsii soum of
Umunogobi aimag with the state border, started in 2020 and put into operation
in 2022. However, the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod cross-border railway, which is a
continuation of the Tavantolgoi-Gashuunsukhait railway and a strategically
important project has been stagnant and negotiations ongoing for the past 16
years.
In 2023, the State Great Khural of Mongolia approved
Resolution No. 68, on some measures to be taken in connection with the
construction of the cross-border railway of Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod ports.
Also, according to Government Resolution No. 58 of 2024, the route of the broad
and narrow gauge railway line of Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod ports across the
borders was determined. The Agreement between the Government of Mongolia and
the Government of the People’s Republic of China on the joint construction of
the port's cross-border railway bridge was concluded on April 2, 2024.
