Ulaanbaatar, October 10, 2024 /MONTSAME/. The construction of a 50 MW/200 MWh Battery Storage Power Station on a 5-hectare area built upon the "Baganuur" substation in the Baganuur district of Ulaanbaatar is progressing successfully.

On October 5, 2024, Prime Minister of Mongolia Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai visited the Battery Storage Power Station, a project implemented by the Governor’s Office of Ulaanbaatar as part of the Government of Mongolia's energy reform.

The contract for the construction of this Power Station was signed on October 6, 2024, with plans to put it into operation by November 30, before the peak winter energy load. Currently, the earthworks have been completed, and foundation work is ongoing.

As Baganuur district is a key hub for supplying electricity to the central and eastern regions of Mongolia, the commissioning of this Battery Storage Power Station is of great significance in several ways, including regulating the frequency of the central region's power system, easing the peak winter load, and addressing power deficiencies in the system through green energy sources.

Governor of the Capital City and the Mayor of Ulaanbaatar Nyambaatar Khishgee informed the Prime Minister that the Battery Storage Power Station would provide an adjustment system that stores excess electricity generated at night and supplies it back to the central system during peak daytime loads. Mayor Nyambaatar also mentioned plans to create renewable energy sources and connect them to the Power Station.

“As part of the construction, a battery station, substation, overhead power line, and an extension to the Baganuur substation will be completed. The first batch of energy storage batteries has already been imported into Mongolia, and installation work has begun. The Battery Storage Power Station can be installed much faster than other renewable energy stations. With regular maintenance, battery stations can operate for more than 20 years,” experts in the energy sector highlighted.

The leading Chinese company “Envision Energy” is the general contractor for the Battery Storage Power Station, and the Mongolian company “Monhorus International” serves as a subcontractor. Envision Energy is one of the world's largest companies specializing in renewable energy, producing wind turbines and energy storage batteries.

“Ulaanbaatar city has, for the first time, traded bonds worth MNT 500 billion in the domestic capital market, with MNT 300 billion of that being invested in the Buuruljuut Power Plant. The first block of this Plant, with a capacity of 150 MW, was commissioned on October 5, 2024. In addition, a 660 MW power plant, currently under construction in Bayantsogt soum of Tuv aimag, is scheduled to be operational by 2027. Furthermore, a 50 MW Baganuur battery storage station is set to be commissioned this coming November. These plants will fully meet the capital’s current energy needs. Most importantly, under the Mongolian Government’s energy reform, the Government's goal of meeting Mongolia's energy needs domestically by 2030 will be achieved by accelerating the green energy transition,” emphasized the Prime Minister of Mongolia.
