Ruling Mongolian People's Party Wins Majority in Local Elections

Ulaanbaatar, October 15, 2024 /MONTSAME/. The elections of the Citizens' Representative Khurals of Aimags, Capital City, Soums, and Districts started at 7:00 and ended at 20:00 on October 11, 2024.


The elections were organized under a majoritarian system, with 17,278 candidates competing for 8,031 seats across 2,395 constituencies. Citizens who are 18 years old and had moved to any aimag, city, or district before February 15, 2024, were eligible to be nominated for the local representative khural.

According to the schedule, the nomination process continued until September 12, followed by a 14-day campaign period for the candidates.

This election was held without a voter turnout requirement, but the voters were encouraged to participate actively in the election.

Preliminary results of the 2024 election of the Citizens' Representative Khurals of Aimags, Capital City, Soums, and Districts show that the ruling Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) made victory in the majority of constituencies. The MPP won in eight out of nine districts in Ulaanbaatar and 14 aimags out of the 21. Particularly, MPP won 40 seats out of the 45 in the Citizens' Representative Khural of Ulaanbaatar. Also, nine women candidates nominated by the MPP for the Citizens' Representative Khural of Ulaanbaatar were all elected.
