The Number of Mongolian Peacekeepers to Be Tripled
SocietyUlaanbaatar, October 22, 2024, /MONTSAME/. The 14th contingent of Military personnel of the Mongolian Armed Forces to serve in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan paid tribute to the General Banner of the Mongolian Armed Forces, the highest military symbol of Mongolia.
Minister of Defense of Mongolia Byambatsogt Sandag opened the Ceremony, highlighting, “Currently, about 900 military personnel of Mongolian Armed Forces are serving in seven UN peacekeeping missions around the world. Currently, Mongolia ranks 8th among 120 troop-contributing nations to peacekeeping missions worldwide, 16th in terms of the number of female peacekeepers, and 1st among the countries in Northeast Asia. Thanks to the tremendous efforts and dedication of more than 22,000 Mongolian military personnel participating in peacekeeping missions over the past 22 years, Mongolian troops earned their reputation as "the World's Troops." As part of the policy on the “Accessible Budget-Sustainable Growth” implemented in the defense sector, the Ministry of Defense of Mongolia is aiming to triple the number of Mongolian personnel serving in the UN peacekeeping missions abroad.”
Additionally, since the outset of Mongolia’s participation in the UN peacekeeping missions in 2002, the Mongolian contingent has been carried by foreign air carriers for more than 20 years. The Agreement on Cooperation was signed between MIAT Mongolia’s National Flag Carrier and the General Staff of Mongolian Armed Forces in October of 2023. Starting in 2024, MIAT Mongolian Airlines commenced operating flights for transporting Mongolian peacekeepers. The 14th contingent of Mongolian peacekeepers, consisting of 230 military personnel, headed to South Sudan with the Mongolian National Flag Carrier.
