2024: A Landmark Year for Mongolia's Foreign Relations with Unprecedented High-Level Visits

Ulaanbaatar, December 31, 2024 /MONTSAME/. On December 27, 2024, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia Nyamdavaa Ravdandorj presented a report on “Mongolia’s Foreign Policy Balance, New Directions, Multilateral Cooperation, the Outcomes of Diplomatic Visits Implemented in 2024, and Activities of Consulates of Mongolia.” In his speech, Spokesperson Nyamdavaa emphasized, “2024 marks the peak year in Mongolia’s foreign relations, with an unprecedented frequency of high and the highest level visits. This year saw 15 visits at the presidential level, three at the Speaker of Parliament level, eight at the Prime Ministerial level, and eight by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Specifically, the President of the Russian Federation and the Vice President of the People’s Republic of China paid official visits to Mongolia, while reciprocal visits were exchanged at the Foreign Minister level between Mongolia and the United States as part of the Strategic Third Neighbor Partnership. The State Visits of the Presidents of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Kazakhstan to Mongolia resulted in the establishment of a Strategic Partnership. During the State Visit of the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Mongolia, the two countries elevated relations to a Comprehensive Partnership. Moreover, Mongolia inaugurated a new Embassy in Uzbekistan and resumed the operations of its Embassy in Indonesia. These developments reflect a strengthened balance in relations with the two neighbors and third neighboring countries. Furthermore, Mongolia has paid utmost attention to relations with countries in Central and Southeast Asia, marking this year as one of new or revitalized directions in its foreign relations.” He also noted, “President of Mongolia Khurelsukh Ukhnaa participated in the General Debate of the 79th Session of United Nations General Assembly in September 2024. On the sidelines of the Session, the President held around ten bilateral meetings with Heads of State, Foreign Ministers, and leaders of international organizations. Subsequently, in November 2024, the President attended the World Leaders Climate Action Summit held in Baku. The fact that the President of Mongolia regularly participates in multilateral activities underscores Mongolia’s growing reputation and position in the international fora.”  Spokesperson Nyamdavaa noted, “This year, Mongolia hosted the World Women’s Forum in collaboration with the United Nations in Ulaanbaatar. This Forum, held under the auspices of the President of Mongolia, resulted in the adoption of the “Ulaanbaatar Declaration for Sustainable Development.” A total of 19 Heads of State and Government, heads of legislative bodies, and ministers, as well as more than 800 women leaders from more than 20 international organizations, non-governmental organizations, civil society, and business, sports, and arts sectors participated in this Forum. Furthermore, Mongolia will host the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification in Ulaanbaatar in 2026, with a dedicated Working Group already established under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia.” Mr. Nyamdavaa Ravdandorj highlighted, “Mongolian passport holders can travel visa-free to 30 countries, while holders of diplomatic and official passports enjoy visa-free access to 65 countries. In 2024, Mongolia signed Agreements on Mutual Visa Exemption with Vietnam, Maldives, and Paraguay. Currently, 210 thousand Mongolians reside in over 90 countries worldwide. In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been actively supporting citizens abroad through 50 diplomatic missions. Diplomatic missions disseminated information and advice to citizens traveling or living abroad, provided guidance and public services, assisted citizens in cases of rights violations, and offered financial support. This year, within the confines of pertinent legal regulations, the Assistance Fund to Mongolian Citizens allocated MNT 221 million in assistance.”



As of 2024, Mongolia has established Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China, Strategic Third Neighbor Partnership with the United States of America, Special Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity with Japan, Strategic Partnership with the Republic of Korea, the Republic of India, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Republic of Kazakhstan, Comprehensive Partnership with the Republic of Türkiye, Canada, and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
