Mongolia and the People's Republic of China Sign Agreement on Establishing the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod Cross-Border Railway

Ulaanbaatar, February 14, 2025 /MONTSAME/ Prime Minister of Mongolia Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai met with Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China Li Qiang in Harbin, the People's Republic of China, on February 14, 2025. Following the meeting, the two sides signed the Agreement between Mongolia and the People's Republic of China on Establishing the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod Cross-Border Railway.
Prime Minister of Mongolia Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai delivered the following speech, stating:
“Dear Mongolians,
Dear International investors,
We have signed the Agreement between Mongolia and the People's Republic of China on Establishing the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod Cross-Border Railway which
is the first in the list of 14 mega projects proposed by the Government of
Mongolia. On behalf of the Government of Mongolia, I would like to express my gratitude to President
of Mongolia Khurelsukh Ukhnaa for providing political support for the
conclusion of this Agreement, Chairman of the State Great Khural (Parliament) Amarbayasgalan
Dashzegve, distinguished members of Parliament, and leaders of political
parties for approving the guidelines and authorized the
Government to sign, and the Government Working Group, and scholars and
researchers in the field.
On behalf of the Government of Mongolia, I would like to express my gratitude to President of Mongolia Khurelsukh Ukhnaa for political support in establishing this agreement, to Chairman of the State Great Khural (Parliament) Amarbaysgalan Dashzegve for approving the main guidelines and granting the Government the authority to sign, and to the honorable Members of Parliament, leaders of the political parties with parliamentary seats, the Government Working Group, and all the scholars and researchers involved in the process.
I also extend my thanks to the Government of the People’s Republic of China, Premier of the State Council Li Qiang, Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi, and the embassies of the two countries for accepting the proposal to conclude this intergovernmental agreement without the involvement of any third party and for reaching a mutual understanding.
Discussions on this project first began in 2004, and since 2008 there have been over 60 rounds of talks. Three recommendations were issued by the National Security Council of Mongolia, six Resolutions by the State Great Khural, and 45 Resolutions by the Government of Mongolia, culminating in today’s conclusion."
The Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod cross-border railway will be the second railway connection between Mongolia and the People’s Republic of China since the Zamiin-Uud-Ereen railway was established under the 1955 Agreement.
