Ulaanbaatar, March 21, 2025 /MONTSAME/. To reduce air pollution in Ulaanbaatar City, green zones are being established in districts, solid fuel consumption is being decreased, and the use of gas and renewable energy is being expanded.

Building on these efforts, the Capital City, in collaboration with international organizations, is implementing a project aimed at increasing the use of renewable energy among households in ger areas. Under this project, the heating and electricity sources of six households in the 31st and 43rd khoroos of Songinokhairkhan district have been converted to renewable energy, thereby reducing the use of household stoves and solid fuel.

To extend this successful model to other households, efforts are underway to introduce renewable energy use among households that are not subject to land clearance. Specifically, under the “If Only I Could Go Solar: From Coal to Solar” Project, eligible households in the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 8th, 23rd, 26th, 30th, 31st, 36th, and 43rd khoroos of the district will have their heating and electricity needs met through renewable energy, along with improved insulation, to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, the Tolgoit and Bayankhoshuu subcenters of Songinokhairkhan district are being developed into apartment housing areas. Consequently, households in khoroos not included in the land clearance process will transition to renewable energy use.

Governor of Songinokhairkhan district Battur Tsedendamba said, “In khoroos designated as green zones, we are introducing Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), electricity, and renewable energy use. For khoroos outside the green zone, we aim to reduce fuel consumption by integrating renewable energy into household use. To achieve this, it is essential for khoroos to submit data on eligible households to the project implementation unit for collaboration. Today's meeting serves as a platform to exchange ideas. The project has already been successfully implemented in two khoroos, and we now plan to expand it to multiple khoroos to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
