UN High-level Meeting on Middle-Income Countries Held in New York

Ulaanbaatar, April 3, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The United Nations High-level Meeting on Middle-Income Countries was held on April 1, 2025, in New York. According to the World Bank's classification method, over 100 countries are considered middle-income, representing 75 percent of the global population.
The High-level Meeting focused on the structural barriers that middle-income countries face in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It also explored the potential impact of new development approaches that look beyond Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which could help shape future international development cooperation.
Ankhbayar Nyamdorj, Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the United Nations, delivered a statement at the Meeting. The Permanent Representative noted that Mongolia was categorized as an upper-middle-income country in 2024. He also highlighted the urgent need to accelerate the reform of the international financial architecture.
Furthermore, Mr. Ankhbayar called for a phased approach to graduation policies for middle-income countries and urged international financial institutions and development partners to increase their investments in infrastructure development for landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) regarding the first year of implementation of the Programme of Action for LLDCs for the decade 2024-2034.
