Ulaanbaatar, April 16, 2025 /MONTSAME/. On April 15, 2025, Prime Minister of Mongolia Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai visited the development site of Kharkhorum City and was introduced to the City's Master Plan.
The new Kharkhorum City is planned to be developed across 189,000 hectares in the Orkhon Valley, covering the territories of Khotont, Khashaat, and Ogiinuur soums of Arkhangai aimag, as well as Kharkhorin soum of Uvurkhangai aimag. The development will include a residential area for 500,000 people, an international airport with 4E classification standards, an agricultural cluster, a 4,800-hectare integrated transport and logistics hub, and a 2,450-hectare tourism zone around Lake Ugii.
A Presidential Decree on Establishing Kharkhorum City has been issued, along with relevant Resolutions from the Parliament and the Government of Mongolia. The Government’s Action Program for 2024-2028 includes the Development of the City.
The officials informed the Prime Minister of Mongolia that half of Kharkhorin city would be designated for green spaces, with plans to resolve electricity needs through renewable energy in the initial phase. They emphasized that the city has great potential to become a key economic hub in the central region of Mongolia.
The challenges in the initial phase include accelerating the excavation, digging, and research work at the ruins of Kharkhorum, the ancient capital of the Great Mongol Empire. Additionally, there is a need to secure investment for the construction of key infrastructure, including the 6-lane, 101.7 km road from Ulaanbaatar to Lun, the 4-lane, 189.6 km road from Lun to Kharkhorin, and the design and construction of a first-class railway line from Ulaanbaatar to Kharkhorum.
