Polls close in Mongolia’s presidential election

/MONTSAME/. Nationwide polls close after Mongolians voted since 7 AM until 10
PM, to elect a new president. Candidates -
U.Khurelsukh from the Mongolian People’s Party, S.Erdene from the Democratic
Party and D.Enkhbat from the Right Person Electorate Coalition - competed for
the presidency.
As reported by the General Election Commission, voter turnout exceeded 50 percent by 9 PM today. Counting process has started countrywide at the same time of the end of the polls and is currently underway at all polling stations. Final voter turnout and preliminary results of the presidential election are expected to be announced shortly.
As of 11 PM, 1866
out of 2087 polling stations submitted the results to the General Election
Commission. Specifically, candidate from the ruling MPP U.Khurelsukh led
the poll with 776,122 votes, whereas candidate from the Right Person
Electoral Coalition D.Enkhbat followed with 235,474 votes with S.Erdene from
the Democratic Party collecting 67,986 votes.
With latest amendments to the Constitution of Mongolia made in December 2019, the new president will be appointed for a single six-year term, instead of the renewable four-year term.
