Goal set to diagnose 90 percent of HIV infected by 2020

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Mongolia is observing the World AIDS Day. The UN-backed initiative on treating AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) has set a goal to increase self-awareness to 90 percent for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infected people, reach 90 percent medical treatment access and also 90 percent treatment rate, by 2020.

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) leads and inspires the world to achieve its shared vision of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths.

Medical specialists, who called a press conference on Tuesday, underlined that the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, especially of syphilis has not been decreasing in Mongolia, which indicates a risk of increased rate of new infections. The highlighted that the issue must be taken into focus.

Youngsters aged below 25 make up half of the total recorded STD cases in Mongolia. The head of UNAIDS mission in Mongolia advises the authorities to increase the hours of the sexual education subject in general education schools.

The UN has estimated that there are approximately 860 people with HIV in Mongolia.
