Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Prime Minister U.Khurelsukh delivered a report on the current state of energy sector during a plenary meeting of the Parliament held on October 20.

The Prime Minister touched upon some measures taken in the energy sector to reduce air pollution in the capital city. In the winter of 2016-2017, the Cabinet took an action to provide 100 percent discount for night-time electricity consumption in ger areas, which reached 114.5 thousand consumers as of the first season of 2017. As such, ger area residents benefitted from a discount worth MNT 3.4 billion last year.

Last July, the Cabinet resolved to continue the measure this winter, and offer a 50 percent discount for night-time electricity use in provincial capitals and big soums. The measure is expected to cost MNT 9.2 billion this winter.

Moreover, wintering preparations are 94 percent complete in the energy sector, said the Prime Minister. In compliance with an ordinance issued by the Minister of Energy, a working group has been established at the Ministry to ensure full preparedness of the sector for the 2017-2018 winter, complete preparations within the deadline and coordinate the measures.

As of today, the national electrical grid of Mongolia incorporates five electrical networks delivering electricity to more than 330 soums across the nation. In 2016, Mongolia produced 5.8 billion kWh electrical energy and 8.7 million GCal thermal energy, imported 1.4 billion kWh electrical energy and exported 33.9 million kWh electrical energy.

In the first half of 2017, Mongolia’s electrical energy generation reached 3 billion kWh, showing an increase of 4.4 percent, thermal energy generation an increase of 2.2 percent and imported energy by 3.8 percent.
