Mining forum convenes in western region

Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/ A Western Regional Forum of the mining sector took place on November 27-28 in Jargalant soum of Khovd aimag.

Officials from Mining and Heavy Industry Ministry and Mineral Resource Authority as well as Minister D. Sumyabazar and MP A. Undraa were present at the forum. In addition, governors of Khovd, Uvs, Bayan-Ulgii, Gobi-Altai and Zavkhan aimags, representatives from government and non-government organizations and specialized associations and businesses attended the forum.

In his opening speech, D. Sumyabazar said, “Continuing the policy and actions of previous government, we are visiting  major mines, including Oyutolgoi and Tavantolgoi, and meets with representatives of government and non-government organizations, professional associations and local administration, investors, experts, specialists and mining workers to reflect their opinions in the activity of the ministry.”

D. Sumyabazar underlined contributions of mines and mining industries, such as Khushuut, Khar tarvagatai, Zeegt, Khotgor, Bayan-Airag, Tayannuur and Khovd Gol to the regional socio-economic development and expressed his hope that the companies will take certain measures to increase jobs, develop infrastructure and protect nature.

At the forum, chief of Mining Policy Department of MMHI J. Ganbaatar made a report ‘Present situation of mining sector-future tendency’. Moreover, governors of the aimags spoke about impacts of mining sector on local development, cooperation and pressing issues.

The mining sector plays an important role in the country’s economy, producing 86 percent of gross export products, 71 percent of gross industrial products, 18 percent of GDP, and making up over 30 percent of state budget revenue in 2016. This year, the sector’s contribution to the economy tends to grow in correlations with price-ups of mining products.
