Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ With an aim to identify real solutions to air pollution in Ulaanbaatar, Bloomberg TV Mongolia is organizing a forum in the Blue Sky Hotel today.

In his opening speech, Bloomberg TV CEO E.Dolgion stressed the serious impact of air pollution on health, citing an example that one in every two children in Ulaanbaatar suffers from respiratory diseases today.

The CEO named two misconceptions that have seemingly hindered the battle against air pollution up to now. He observed that the first obstacle is the attitude towards air pollution and its link to poverty. “Air is relatively clean in Ulaanbaatar’s wealthy neighborhood whereas the low-income people in ger areas endure highly polluted air,” he said.

Secondly, he criticized the Government’s approach to air pollution saying, “The Government has tried to implement its anti-pollution policy and actions by itself, in the process of which the private sector was disregarded.”

Emphasizing the importance of pragmatic approach in the fight against air pollution, CEO E.Dolgion expressed his confidence that the forum will serve as a platform for constructive and productive discussion on ‘real’ solutions instead of empty talk and slogans.

The forum participants made of government officials, environmental, construction, financial and technological experts and representatives of non-governmental organizations agreed that transition to apartment is the most effective solution to air pollution in the medium and long term. It is a widely acknowledged fact that ger areas produce most of the smoke in the capital city.

Business representatives at the forum discussed how public and the private sector can effectively cooperate on continuation of the 8 percent interest housing mortgage loan, seeing as how housing mortgage loan is considered to be the ultimate strategy for transition to apartments.

The construction and financial sector experts voiced a stance that the private sector should take charge of the transition to apartments with a policy support from the government.

The forum agenda incorporates three main topics: Apartment – Clean Air, Apartment – Market and Apartment – Stable Finance. The Smog-free Ulaanbaatar forum is being held in cooperation with the Ministry of Construction and Urban Development and the Mongolian Mortgage Corporation LLC.
