Illegal moose hunting fined with MNT 20 million

Selenge /MONTSAME/ An illegal moose hunting was revealed in Selenge aimag last January, reports MONTSAME correspondent in the province.

Several residents of Ulaanbaatar were fined MNT 20 million for the illegal hunting of a moose (Alces Alces) in Khuder soum. Moose is a specially protected animal, registered in Mongolia’ Red Book. Moose hunting has been prohibited since 1953.

In the light of the recent event, the Specialized Inspection Agency of Selenge aimag called for increased awareness and sense of duty regarding similar illegal hunting activities among its citizens.

There are two subspecies of moose in Mongolia- Ussurian elk and Yakut moose, both labeled and protected as Very Rare in the Mongolian Law on Fauna.
