Project for improvement of livestock genetic resources ongoing

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/  The National Center for Livestock Gene Bank at the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry is implementing a project Improving Animals Genetics, Resource Value and Productive Performance, financed by the Asian Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (AFACI) in 2017-2019.
 
The project targets the protection of livestock genetic resource, advanced biotechnology introduction in livestock breeding, improvement of service quality and technical and technological capacity of the National Center for Livestock Gene Bank.

Currently, a series of meetings have been organized by the AFACI, exchanging experiences with other countries and improving quality of livestock breeding. An expert from the National Center for Livestock Gene Bank attended the ‘Beef cattle genetics’ meeting held in Lao People’s Democratic Republic, presented the project’s works and its outcomes and the project was approved to proceed.

A  training for artificial insemination experts on embryo transfer technology in steppe white breed sheep was conducted in Kherlen soum of Khentii aimag under the project. The embryos were successfully transferred to 13 sheeps and the first offspring was received in April.

In 2018, it is planned to study the local chicken genotype and cooperate on training specialists.
