Ground breaking ceremony for ‘Ulaanbaatar Urban Forest’ held

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ A ground breaking ceremony for establishment of Ulaanbaatar Urban Forest or Mongolia-Korean Friendship Forest was held today within the joint project ‘Green Wall’. The work will be implemented in Dambadarjaa, the 16th khoroo of Sukhbaatar district with non-refundable aid of the Korea Forest Service.
Construction works will be conducted on 40 ha of land with funding of KRW 3 billion and the project will run until May, 2021. The park will have cycleway, playground and sports fields and more than 100 types of trees and plants will be planted.

“I am confident that the garden will make valuable contribution not only to air quality improvement of Ulaanbaatar city but also to creating condition to citizens to spend their freetime in healthy environment and to gain ecological education. Hence, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism will support it fully,” said Minister N.Tserenbat during the opening.
The first stage of the ‘Green Wall’ joint project for prevention of desertification and reduction of yellow dust storm wrapped up in 2016 and tree nurseries were set up on 20 ha of land in Lun soum of Tuv aimag and on 24 ha of land in Dalanzadgad soum of Umnugobi aimag as well as afforestation works of saxual trees and forest belt have been done on almost 3000 ha of land of which 80-90 percent have grown well in the course of the project.
The Mongolian Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the Korea Forest Service established a cooperation agreement in December 2016 and decided to implement the project until 2022. The second stage of the project aims to build greenery and public parks on about 40 ha of land in Ulaanbaatar city.
