National Water Council to be formed at National Security Council

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. The Water Law amendments adopted in January 2020 stated to re-establish Water Agency, which was closed down in 2012.
The Water Agency will perform research on water reserves on the country’s territory and carry out policies designed for increasing water reserves, promoting water-use efficiency, protection and rehabilitation. Thanks to the agency, coordination between water-related authorities to be enhanced, raising public awareness on water issues and its benefits.
Also, the law states to rebuild the National Water Committee, which stopped operating in 2015, establish national water council, headed by Prime Minister of Mongolia, at the National Security Council.
The estimated annual water consumption in Mongolia is 570 million cubic meter and 80 percent of the annual usage comes from groundwater and 20 percent is sourced from surface water.
