Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Mongolia has been marking third Wednesday of every March as the day of preparedness and response for earthquake since 2017 with a view to strengthen the capacity for seismic disaster risk management. This year the day falls on today, March 25.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) organizes public training and drills on this day annually to help the public obtain the knowledge and tools they need for safe and effective preparedness, response, and recovery during earthquakes.
Because of the suspension of activities involving a large number of people due to the Covid-19, such public drills are canceled this year. However, online and tele training are planned to broadcast to help people prepare for earthquakes.
As of March 2020, there were 19 earthquakes of 3.5 magnitudes or greater in Mongolia, including two recent earthquakes of 4.5 magnitude and 5.8 magnitude in Gobi-Altai aimag, and shaking of 12 of them were felt by the residents.
