Gandan area being developed to become free of pit toilet and pollution

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. A Ger district area surrounding the Gandantegchinlen Monastery, so-called Gandan area, is located near city center and an integral part of the founding and development of Ulaanbaatar city. 


The Ulaanbataar city master plan outlines to develop the Gandan area as a center for religion, history, culture and tourism of Mongolia. 


Therefore, special emphasis is given to the Gandan Area, located near city center, as part of a plan to get rid of outdoor pit toilets and chimney pipes with a view to minimize air and soil pollutions. 


A number of works is currently underway, such as connecting the entire area with centralized water supply network, electricity and sewage system, and improving its engineering infrastructure system with an ultimate purpose of building residential apartments to provide convenient living environment for the residents.  


In Gandan area, 88 percent of the territory estimated to suffer from soil contamination, sounding an alarming pollution level for the residents’ health. 


As a result of the aforementioned works, a private housing district to accommodate a total 1,300 households is expected to be built.  


The Gandan area covers around 55 ha land area, and nearly 2000 households reside in the area with 65 business entities operating.
