Mongolia joins in support of UN chief’s appeal on gender-based violence
PoliticsUlaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Mongolia has expressed its support for United Nations Secretary General António Guterres’s appeal on Gender-Based Violence and COVID-19, calling for measures to address “a horrifying global surge in domestic violence” directed towards women and girls, linked to lockdowns imposed by governments responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
136 signatories have now subscribed to the appeal.
Along with Argentina, Morocco, Turkey, New Zealand and the European Union, Mongolia issued a joint statement regarding the appeal on April 8, which reads as follows.
“Mr Secretary-General,
We have the honour to transmit the attached statement made on behalf of 124 signatories regarding your appeal on Gender-Based Violence and COVID-19.
The statement expresses our full commitment to make prevention and redress of gender-based violence a key part of the COVID-19 response. It also underlines the need to include women in all response and recovery actions.
This cross-regional initiative demonstrates our strong support for your unprecedented appeal. We will work with all relevant actors to ensure its implementation.”
