Voter turnout for local council elections 15.2 percent

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. Polls for elections of the Citizens’ Representative Khurals (local council) of aimags, capital city, soums and districts opened today, October 15, Thursday at 7 AM.
The General Election Commission has just reported that the voter turnout was 15.2 percent on the national level as of 11 AM. In specific, voter turnout on the 21-aimag-level was around 16.4 percent, while turnout in Ulaanbaatar city was 13.7 percent.
2,140,095 voting-age citizens are registered on the list of eligible voters countrywide, and 1,004,256 of them are in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar.
A total of 20,258 voters who are unable to visit the polling station by themselves cast their vote through sealed mobile ballot boxes yesterday, October 14, and their ballot papers were put into the voting machines as the polls opened today.
Prime Minister of Mongolia U.Khurelsukh has recently cast his ballot in the elections of Citizens’ Representative Khural of Ulaanbaatar city and districts at a polling station located at the 48th secondary school of Bayanzurkh District, Ulaanbaatar city.
President Kh.Battulga is also expected to vote at the same polling station today afternoon.
Speaker of the State Great Khural G.Zandanshatar has cast his ballot at another polling station in Bayanzurkh District. After casting his vote, Speaker Zandanshatar encouraged all citizens, particularly the young people, to take an active part in the elections of local self-government bodies by stressing that local council elections tend to have lower turnout than legislative elections.
The polls for the elections of the Citizens’ Representative Khurals will close at 8 PM today.
