Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/. The Global Education Coalition marks its first anniversary this year. Thus on March 29, a high-level ministerial event was virtually organized under the theme, ‘One year into COVID: Prioritizing education recovery to avoid a generational catastrophe’, gathering education ministers of the member countries. The ministers exchanged views on three main topics, ‘Keeping schools open, prioritizing and supporting teachers’, ‘School dropout and learning loss’, and ‘Digital transformation and the future of education’, sharing their practices.

A World Bank study has calculated that per capita income would decrease by USD 865 if the situation continues to persist. This amounts to a loss of USD 2.8 trillion in East Asia and the Pacific region.

In Mongolia, children have had remote classes for about 45 percent of the curriculum due to the pandemic so far. However, due to factors such as different levels of livelihood, remote locations, and lack of infrastructure, 178 thousand children or 26 percent of total students are currently unable to be involved in the classes. Thus, digital transformation of the education sector is highly necessary in order to resolve the issue of students falling behind, highlighted Minister of Education and Science L.Enkh-Amgalan in his remarks. He then noted that special focus will be given to matters including development of classes that are accessible in more various ways.

Calling for the Ministers to jointly look for solutions to the pressing issues, Minister L.Enkh-Amgalan invited the ministers to the high-level meeting for education ministers that will be organized in Mongolia in October.
