Luxembourg’s Minister becomes acquainted with local health institutes

Ulaanbaatar/MONTSAME/.  Luxembourg’s government delegation led by Mr. Franz Fayot, Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs and Minister of the Economy, visited Khuvsgul aimag. Dr. Khalid Sharifi, Head of Office for UNFPA Mongolia Country Office, and representatives from the Ministry of Health of Mongolia and other relevant joined the visiting delegation.



After meeting with Governor of Khuvsgul Aimag Sh.Iderbayasgalan, the delegation visited the aimag’s central hospital and maternity ward to get acquainted with the results of the projects on maternal and newborn health and early detection of cardiovascular diseases being implemented with the grant of the Government of Luxembourg. Moreover, they exchanged views with representatives of relevant organizations, health workers, herders and local citizens on the pressing issues locals are facing.


Within the framework of the maternal and newborn health project, which began in 2008, a total of MNT358.5 million worth diagnostic and treatment equipment has been installed in the aimag and 42 specialists have been trained in 18 types of modern diagnostic and treatment methods. Through the maternal and newborn telemedicine network, 245 cases of obstetric complications and 69 cases of neonatal complications were consulted and treated locally.  

Maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality have steadily decreased, and care for low birthweight infants has improved as a result of the project.
