Ulaanbaatar, June 9, 2023 /MONTSAME/. The commitments of the countries to identify their own priorities through comprehensive system analysis, including a review of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and evaluation of the current situation were emphasized by the speakers of the National Workshop on Effective Governance for Sustainable Development in Mongolia.
UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development plays a crucial role in the successful implementation of Mongolia’s long-term development policy “Vision-2050.” The COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions have had a negative impact on progress toward most of the SDGs, and the current estimate for implementation stands at 10 percent worldwide.
During the workshop, Ms. Veronique Edith D Verbruggen, Senior Inter-Regional Advisor at DPIDG/UN DESA, emphasized that formulating policies is evident, but nationwide implementation requires concerted efforts. Furthermore, she explained the consequences of a lack of comprehensive approaches to challenges.
Systems thinking approaches are the conceptual basis for understanding the organization in its environment and provide a basis for other key characteristics, namely a process of learning (personal mastery), the challenging and building of mental models, and the development of a shared vision and team learning.
Economic Affairs Officer at UN ESCAP Aida Karazhanova, who worked in Mongolia in 2018, highlighted the benefits of taking comprehensive approaches to tackling issues and acknowledged Mongolia’s commendable progress in this matter.
Also, she said, "I had the privilege of working with a highly skilled and professional group. Through our collaboration with the Ministry of Economic and Development (formerly known as the National Development Agency), the National Statistic Office, and the Governor's Office of the Capital City, we reduced air pollution to a certain level. I am curious about how the data on air pollution has changed over the past five years. I am willing to cooperate with the researchers to analyze the data."
UN Environmental Affairs Officer Aneta Nikolova emphasized the importance of systems thinking approaches, rather than relying solely on policies, in addressing the challenges faced by countries. Also, she highlighted the significance of fostering dialogues and promoting integration between nations, particularly in the post-pandemic era.
