A Conference on the theme "Mongolia-Canada Relations in Global Perspective"

Ulaanbaatar, October 31, 2023 /MONTSAME/. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Canada, the Embassy of Mongolia to Canada and the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto organized a Conference on the theme "Mongolia-Canada Relations in Global Perspective" on October 24, 2023.

 

Sarantogos Erdenetsogt, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mongolia to Canada, Joe Wong, Vice President International at the University of Toronto, and Peter Loewen, Director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto, delivered opening remarks at the Conference. Panel sessions were held on the themes "Historical Reflections: Mongolian Studies in Canada" and "Economy, Security, and Society."

 

At the panel session "Historical Reflections: Mongolian Studies in Canada," Professor Michael Gervers of the Department of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough, Professor Jennifer Purtle of the Department of Art History at the University of Toronto, Professor David Curtis Wright of the Department of History at the University of Calgary, and Elisabeth Rose, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Toronto, presented on the current state and future prospects for Mongol studies.

 

At the panel session "Economy, Security, and Society," Munkh-Ochir Dorjjugder, Executive Office of the National Security Council of Mongolia, Deputy Chief and Director for Strategic Policy and Analysis (online participation), Kongdan (Katy) Oh, Korea Economic Institute of America, Jonathan Miller, MacDonald Laurier Institute (online participation), and Oyu Vasha, Minister Counselor and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Mongolia in Ottawa, presented on Mongolian-Canadian relations in today's regional conditions, the importance of official talks, and opportunities for deepening cooperation between the two countries.

 

This Conference was a remarkable event for the dissemination, preservation, and promotion of Mongol studies in Canada, highlighting the history and significance of Mongolian-Canadian relations and charting a path for the future. By decree of the President of Mongolia, Professor Michael Gervers of the Department of History and Cultural Studies was awarded the Medal of Friendship for his contributions to the development of Mongol studies. At the Conference, Ambassador of Mongolia E. Sarantogos presented Professor Gervers with the medal, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a foreigner.
