Ulaanbaatar, January 16, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The Governor’s Office of Darkhan-Uul aimag and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. Under this memorandum, a project will be implemented to increase green spaces, aiming to bring the per capita green space in Darkhan City to 24 square meters.

Additionally, the two sides plan to launch agroforestry on 200 hectares for growing vegetables and fruits, with the goal of increasing domestic supply.

This collaboration supports ten of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals, as well as several National Movements initiated by the President of Mongolia including “One Billion Trees,” “Food Supply and Safety,” and “Healthy Mongolian,” alongside the Government of Mongolia’s “Vision-2050” agenda and the core objectives of the UN FAO.

Furthermore, the following objectives are planned under this cooperation. To provide city residents with high-quality ecosystem services, which include clean air and clean water, and increase the number and quality of urban green spaces and nearby forests.

Activities will also be supported to establish a climate-resilient and sustainable local food production system and short supply chains in and around the city.

In addition, it will promote reducing greenhouse gas emissions and, in line with the principles of the circular economy, encourage green agricultural processing, efficient food distribution, and improvements to the food environment, ultimately supporting the sustainable and equitable use of energy and water resources, as well as a stable, accessible food supply for the city.
