The President of Mongolia announced Mongolia’s commitment to planting and fostering one billion trees by 2030 at the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference and launched the "Billions of Trees" National Movement. This aims to protect the environment, cherish traditions and customs of loving and living in harmony with nature, reduce the impact of climate change, increase forest and water resources, ensure ecological balance, and increase the country’s forest reserves to 9 percent.

Since preparations for tree planting have been made in previous years, Mongolia will begin large-scale tree planting this year. Specifically, the National Movement is set to intensify between 2025 and 2027, with plans to plant 570 million trees, and will continue sustainably from 2028 to 2030 to plant 850 million more. As of today, 84 million trees have been planted under the Movement, either directly or in equivalent terms. This effort has led to a 5-6 times increase in the number of trees, seedlings, seed reserves, and nurseries compared to previous years. With 12.1 tons of seed reserves from 39 species of trees collected nationwide, it is now possible to cultivate 292 million seedlings. The goal is to increase the stockpile of seedlings and saplings to 100 million in the future.
