Mongolia Consolidates Environmental Laboratories to Enhance Nationwide Monitoring Capacity
Environment
Ulaanbaatar, May 20, 2025 /MONTSAME/. In an effort to increase capacity and improve the effectiveness of environmental laboratories, the Government of Mongolia decided to consolidate the laboratories of the Water Department of Mongolia, the Environmental Research Center, the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring, and the Freshwater Resources and Nature Conservation Center under the Environmental Research Center of the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring.
The consolidation of the laboratories is expected to strengthen the government's environmental management framework, reduce environmental pollution and degradation, and enhance the quality and accessibility of public services.
Furthermore, leveraging existing resources, the Environmental Laboratory of the Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring Division in Umnugobi aimag will be expanded to serve as the central laboratory for the Gobi region. Similarly, the Uvs aimag laboratory will serve the Western region, Uvurkhangai aimag in the Khangai region, Darkhan-Uul aimag in the Central region, and Khentii aimag in the Eastern region.
This restructuring will enable the precise identification of a wide range of hazardous organic compounds and heavy metals in air, water, and soil that pose direct threats to human health, including carcinogenic and mutagenic risks. It will also reinforce the national system for the prevention, reduction, and mitigation of environmental pollution.
