Ulaanbaatar, December 2, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The twenty-third session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 23) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) opened on December 1, 2025, in Panama City, the Republic of Panama.

The meeting will discuss national implementation progress, science-based policy alignment, and the development of the post-2030 International Strategic Framework under the Convention. Panama, as the host of the three Rio Convention scientific and implementation review bodies in 2025, has reaffirmed its strong commitment to advancing environmental protection and sustainable development. The country emphasized its determination to help address global crises by promoting integrated and coordinated approaches across the three foundational pillars and to contribute to building a resilient future for its people.

Panama underscored that drought, desertification, and land degradation are not challenges confined to dryland countries alone but existential issues increasingly threatening small island nations, drawing heightened international attention during the opening session.

Representing the Government of Mongolia, the national delegation will present progress and preparations for hosting the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the UNCCD, which will take place in Ulaanbaatar on August 17-28, 2026, and engage partners to strengthen cooperation ahead of the conference.
