Mongolia to compete in Olympics for taekwondo
SportsUlaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ An athlete from the “Aldar” sports club at the Armed Forces of Mongolia, M.Tumenbayar has become the very first Mongolian to participate in the taekwondo events at the Olympic Games.
He has won a silver medal in the men’s -68kg contest of the 2016 Asian Taekwondo Olympic Qualification Tournament, which ran last Sunday in Manila of Philippines. In the first bout, he defeated an athlete from Nepal, then beat Rohullah Nikpai, a twice Olympic bronze medalist of Afghanistan, in the second bout.
At the decisive contest for the Olympic quota, he defeated Chang Cheng-hao of Chinese Taipei with scores 12:7. At the gold medal contest, he lost to Ahmad Abu-Ghaush from Jordan.
As of today, Mongolia has collected 23 Olympic quotas in archery, athletics, boxing, shooting, taekwondo and wrestling. More quotas are expected to be grabbed in judo, boxing, wrestling, weightlifting and cycling.
